At the school all woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments, strings, piano, harp, guitar, accordion, singing, classical ballet, music theory and Solfeggio are tought. There is an excellent education for chamber music, ensemble and orchestra classes (symphony orchestra, string orchestra, symphonic wind orchestra, brass band, jazz band, rock band, clarinet orchestra, flute orchestra, guitar orchestra as well as Children’s Choir and Youth Choir). The music school is one of the largest in Slovenia and has more than 1000 students – 840 are in instrumental and singing lessons, 104 attend classical ballet and 80 children up to 6 years old are in preparatory classes. The 67 teachers of the Music School also teach in the secondary level at the Art Department of the Grammar School in Koper. The special quality of the keyboard and wind instrument departments are internationally known. The continuous further training of the teachers at the school has a high priority. The Koper Music School is involved in the organization of the Biennale of Contemporary Music (also students of the Johann- Joseph-Fux-Conservatory Graz have already participated), in various international masterclasses and pedagogical meetings (e.g. European Piano Teachers Association EPTA), participated in orchestra camps in the summer and in the international Giuseppe Tartini Competition. At recently there has been a very close cooperation with “Zespół Szkół Muzycznych im. I. Paderewskiego” in the Polish city of Bialystok. The key person for the Erasmus project is Director Iztok Babnik.
The “Vladimir Lovec” Symphony Orchestra
The Symphony Orchestra “Vladimir Lovec” of the Koper Music School with its branches in Izola and Piran and the Koper Grammar School unites students of higher basic musical education, students of the Musical Grammar School and last but not least teachers of all three music schools of the coastal region.
The orchestra performed for the first time in 1955 under the direction of conductor Vladimir Lovec. The orchestra was also named after him. In the beginning, the orchestra was composed only of string players. 50 years later it developed into a chamber orchestra. Until 2013, the orchestra performed in symphonic formation only on a project basis, but since 2013 it has performed all year round.
The symphony orchestra “Vladimir Lovec” is proud of its tradition, numerous performances and its members. Many joined the orchestra after gaining their first experience in the young string orchestra or in various string, wind and brass orchestras. Members of the orchestra develop and mature through participation and involvement in various projects.
After graduating from music school, the experienced former members of the orchestra gladly accept our invitations to participate in more important events, thus helping in the development of younger colleagues.
The orchestra has been invited to numerous guest concerts both in Slovenia and abroad, within the framework of regional and national meetings, musical revues, international cooperation and anniversary concerts.
